The Wonderful World of Critiquing Art

Wed May 21, 2008, 4:59 PM
I know this is extremely unpopular with some people in the artistic world but what is with critiquing art these days. I guess I'm in a minority when I draw or whatever because I'm never thinking about the style; the political ramifications; or what my overall message is. I just put it out on paper or whatever else is available. Maybe that makes me a terrible person to be called an artist; but God, doesn't anyone just look at something and say, " I like that" anymore? Seriously I can remember looking at Van Gogh's Irises ( some of my favourite paintings) and thinking that they were really beautiful. Then the moment of happiness was destroyed by some...person behind me going into the subtle nuances of what the painting meant going almost as far as estimating what Vincent must have eaten for breakfast.

Am I alone in thinking, who cares what Van Gogh thought of the asylum nurses and how they treated him. I look at those paintings and they make me feel good that I am privileged enough to lay eye upon them. Why is it that some people feel the need to dissect art. When you play a game of cards, do you sit back and talking wildly about how the subtle flipping of the dealer's wrist filled you with impending dread and how the uneven jaw of the winner obviously showed how he/she was really depressed about some homeless person he/she saw three days ago?

I'm sorry but I'm just tired of it. This isn't an attempt to insult people or their education however just because I have a good working knowledge of chemistry doesn't mean I ponder what the pH of the paint used is. I look, I see, I like or I dislike. I think everyone should try it.
